checking spelling, grammar, punctuation and consistency

fact-checking:

checking the accuracy of facts and quotes

indexing:

producing an alphabetical list of names, places, subjects, or concepts, with page references

manuscript evaluation:

reviewing a manuscript to evaluate its creative and market potential, and make general suggestions for improvement

mark-up:

inserting specifications, in code or text, to instruct formatters or typesetters of layout requirements

proofreading:

typewriterreading proofs of an edited manuscript to ensure required changes have been incorporated; reviewing the author's modifications

rewriting:

creating a new manuscript, or parts of a manuscript, based on research and content supplied by the author

stylistic editing:

clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon, smoothing language, ensuring appropriateness for context

substantive editing:

clarifying and reorganizing the content and structure of a manuscript
